Principal Engineer - Flood Risk Modelling

About the role

The Principal Engineer (Flood Risk Modelling) will lead and deliver hydraulic and flood risk modelling projects for internal and external clients. You will mentor junior staff, manage resources and finances, and ensure high‑quality technical outputs across the Water Team.

Key responsibilities

• Lead flood risk and hydraulic modelling projects using industry‑standard software.
• Provide technical support, resource planning and financial oversight for assigned projects.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers, delegating tasks to build capability.
• Review and QA modelling work, ensuring compliance with UK water industry standards, policies and legislation.
• Produce detailed project reports, technical notes and GIS‑based desk studies.
• Apply project management procedures, monitor programme and financial performance in line with BMS policies.
• Continuously upskill on industry standards and cascade knowledge to the team.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering or equivalent.
• Extensive experience in 1D‑2D hydraulic and hydrological modelling, flood alleviation schemes and highway infrastructure projects.
• Strong understanding of UK water industry legislation and standards.
• Proven ability to lead large multidisciplinary teams and manage project finances.
• Working towards chartership with ICE or CIWEM (desirable).

Required skills

• Flood Modeller Pro, Tuflow, Estry, HEC‑RAS, Infoworks ICM 2D.
• 1D‑2D hydraulic modelling and hydrological modelling.
• GIS tools: QGIS, ArcGIS, MapInfo.
• Project management procedures and BMS software.
