Scientific Illustrator

About the role

We are seeking a passionate Scientific Illustrator to transform complex scientific concepts into compelling visual stories that support world‑class research communication. Working within our STMJ team, you will create vector‑based figures for the flagship journal Cell and occasional journal covers, while collaborating closely with editors, authors, and external freelancers.

Key responsibilities

• Conceptualize and produce high‑quality illustrations from authors’ sketches or electronic files.
• Generate illustration ideas when authors provide no initial concepts.
• Manage freelance illustration work, performing quality control and ensuring consistency.
• Research, license, and incorporate photographic images as needed.
• Liaise with Cell Press editors, authors, and external suppliers to refine drafts.
• Attend seminars and stay informed on design innovations and industry trends.
• Support the creation of cover designs and marketing collateral using Adobe Photoshop.
• Meet frequent journal deadlines and proactively troubleshoot illustration issues.

Required profile

• Demonstrated mastery of Adobe Illustrator for creating vector‑based scientific figures.
• Proficiency with Adobe Photoshop for cover and marketing design.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with editorial staff and external authors.
