Patient Care Assistant – Critical Care Unit

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant provides direct bedside support to patients in the Critical Care Unit, working under the supervision of the Team Leader and registered nurses. This full‑time, day‑shift position focuses on hands‑on care, assistance with activities of daily living, and execution of specified technical tasks.

Key responsibilities

• Measure and record vital signs, weight, height, and intake‑output data.
• Encourage patients to turn, cough, use incentive spirometry, and perform deep‑breathing exercises.
• Assist patients with ambulation, transfers, and positioning; transport to wheelchairs when needed.
• Provide morning/evening care including bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, linen changes, and bedside cleaning.
• Empty and document drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling linen and supplies appropriately.
• Perform phlebotomy, specimen collection, and EKGs after required training.
• Assist with ROM exercises, use of ambulatory devices, and application/removal of compression devices and abdominal binders.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; certification as a patient care assistant preferred.
• Ability to follow care plans and work under direct supervision.
• Strong attention to detail for accurate documentation.
• Physical stamina to lift, turn, and reposition patients safely.
