Patient Care Assistant – Critical Care Unit

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant works in the Critical Care Unit to provide direct bedside support to patients under the supervision of a registered nurse and team leader. This full‑time, day‑shift position involves hands‑on care, monitoring, and assistance with daily activities to promote patient comfort and recovery.

Key responsibilities

• Measure and record vital signs, intake‑output, weight, and height.
• Encourage and assist patients with turning, coughing, deep‑breathing exercises, and incentive spirometry.
• Assist with ambulation, transfers, and transport to wheelchairs or other locations.
• Provide personal care such as bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, linen changes, and bedside cleaning.
• Manage drainage systems, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins, documenting output accurately.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling linen and supplies properly.
• Perform specialized tasks including phlebotomy, EKG acquisition, ostomy bag care, and application/removal of anti‑embolism stockings or sequential compression devices.
• Collect urine, stool, and sputum specimens as ordered and assist with range‑of‑motion exercises.
• Respond promptly to patient call lights and address requests.

Required profile

• Functions as a direct patient caregiver assisting registered nurses.
• Works under the supervision of a team leader and may serve as a sitter for patients requiring constant observation.
• Capable of performing a wide range of bedside tasks safely and efficiently.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy (additional training required).
• Electrocardiogram (EKG) acquisition (special training required).
• Accurate measurement of vital signs.
• Specimen collection (urine, stool, sputum).
• Use of incentive spirometry.
• Application of anti‑embolism stockings and sequential compression devices.
• Ostomy bag care and cleaning.
