Patient Care Assistant – Cardiovascular ICU

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant provides direct bedside support to patients in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center. Working under the supervision of the Team Leader and registered nurses, you will assist with daily activities, monitor vital signs, and ensure a safe, comfortable environment for critically ill patients.

Key responsibilities

• Record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake‑output measurements.
• Encourage and assist patients with turning, coughing, deep breathing, and incentive spirometry as ordered.
• Assist with ambulation, transfers, wheelchair use, and transport.
• Provide personal care including bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, bed linen changes, and bedside cleaning.
• Empty and document drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans and emesis basins.
• Collect urine, stool, sputum, and other specimens per physician orders.
• Perform phlebotomy, label specimens using two patient identifiers, and restock draw supplies.
• Conduct EKGs after completing required training.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling linens and supplies appropriately.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; CNA certification preferred.
• Ability to work full‑time day shifts in a fast‑paced ICU setting.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow care plans accurately.
• Excellent communication skills for interacting with patients, families, and the care team.
