GEF Consultant – Environmental Project Coordination

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a GEF Consultant to support the coordination and implementation of GEF‑funded projects in India across the Chemicals and Waste, Climate Change Mitigation and Transparency, and International Waters focal areas. Based in the UNEP India Country Office, the consultant will work closely with national stakeholders, UNEP task managers, and GEF teams to ensure coherent project delivery.

Key responsibilities

• Provide coordination support for UNEP‑GEF projects in India, engaging national focal points and responding to their requests.
• Serve as the internal focal point for project coordination, linking UNEP task managers with project teams.
• Contribute to the development of the GEF‑9 strategy in India, including data collection, stakeholder mapping, and baseline analyses.
• Assist in scenario analyses for chemicals and pollution management, focusing on POPs, the Stockholm Convention and the Minamata Convention.
• Monitor project progress, review quarterly reports, update UNEP reporting systems, and communicate with steering committee members.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in environment, natural resource management, law, policy, economics, engineering, or related field (or Bachelor’s plus two years experience).
• Minimum three years of professional experience at national or international level in environmental programmes.
• Strong understanding of environmental issues in India, especially chemicals, waste, plastics, climate change, and water resources.
• Experience working with diverse stakeholders and coordinating multi‑partner projects.
