Patient Care Assistant – Neuroscience Unit

About the role

The Patient Care Assistant provides direct bedside support to patients in the Neuroscience Unit, working under the supervision of the Team Leader and registered nurses. This full‑time, day‑shift position focuses on delivering hands‑on care, monitoring vital signs, and assisting with daily living activities.

Key responsibilities

• Measure and record temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, and intake‑output.
• Encourage patients to turn, cough, use incentive spirometry, and perform deep‑breathing exercises.
• Assist patients with ambulation, transfers, wheelchair use, and transport.
• Provide personal care such as bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing, linen changes, and bedside cleaning.
• Empty and document drains, canisters, urine bags, bedpans, and emesis basins.
• Maintain a safe environment by reporting equipment issues and handling supplies appropriately.
• Perform phlebotomy, EKG, specimen collection, and proper labeling using two patient identifiers.
• Assist with range‑of‑motion exercises, ambulatory devices, and application/removal of compression stockings and abdominal binders.
• Respond promptly to call lights and patient requests.

Required profile

• Ability to work under the supervision of a Team Leader and registered nurses.
• Willingness to function as a sitter for patients requiring continuous supervision.
• Commitment to maintaining patient safety and adhering to care plans.

Required skills

• Phlebotomy (with required training).
• Electrocardiogram (EKG) performance (special training).
• Vital signs monitoring.
• Specimen collection and proper labeling.
• Use of incentive spirometry.
• Use of sequential compression devices.
• Assistance with ambulatory devices.
• Range of motion (ROM) exercise support.
