Lead Legal – Product

About the role

The Lead – Legal will provide strategic legal guidance to NPCI’s product, technology and business teams, ensuring compliance while enabling innovation in India’s digital payments ecosystem. You will work closely with cross‑functional stakeholders to design scalable, risk‑balanced solutions.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver end‑to‑end legal advice on product development, lifecycle management and business operations, translating complex regulations into business‑friendly guidance.
• Monitor and interpret laws affecting digital payments, data privacy and financial services; ensure products, services and processes meet regulatory standards.
• Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including licensing, commercial, service, technology (MSA, APIs, platforms) and HR/marketing contracts.
• Lead negotiations on high‑value domestic and international transactions.
• Identify legal, commercial and operational risks across documents and business models; provide balanced, solution‑oriented recommendations.
• Standardize legal templates, processes and documentation to accelerate execution and improve clarity.
• Manage intellectual property protection, including trademarks, copyrights and filings, coordinating with external counsel.
• Collaborate with product, operations, HR and leadership teams to structure business arrangements and develop internal policies.

Required profile

• LL.B (5‑year) or LL.M qualification.
• Strong analytical and research abilities.
• Proven drafting and negotiation expertise for complex agreements.
• Ability to simplify complex legal and regulatory concepts for business audiences.
