Mechanical Engineer – Refinery Asset Support

About the role

The Mechanical Engineer will be the primary technical contact for assigned refinery assets, providing troubleshooting, design of repair solutions, and supporting mechanical integrity and reliability across the plant.

Key responsibilities

• Design permanent and temporary repair solutions for piping, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and related equipment following ASME and API codes.
• Perform fitness‑for‑service assessments and provide engineering deliverables such as piping and pressure vessel design.
• Offer field support for maintenance and operational troubleshooting, including equipment inspections and change management.
• Support preventative maintenance planning, sparing strategies and monitor unit health.
• Contribute mechanical engineering expertise to plant outages, turnarounds and reliability initiatives.
• Uphold BP’s safety culture and ensure compliance with personal and process safety standards.

Required profile

• Mechanical Engineering degree.
• 5+ years of experience as a Unit Mechanical Engineer in an oil refinery (total 7‑13 years).
• Strong knowledge of refinery processes and equipment (piping, vessels, columns, pumps, exchangers, furnaces, valves).
• Practical application of ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII, ASME PCC‑1/PCC‑2, NBIC and API 570/571/510/579 (Level 2).
• Ability to recommend appropriate inspection techniques (RT, UT, PT, MT) and solid understanding of metallurgy and welding.
• Experience with Management of Change and SAP.
