Drone Design and Development Engineer

About the role

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay is seeking a Drone Design and Development Engineer to contribute to a government‑funded project focused on advanced UAV technologies. The role involves conceptual sizing, detailed design, testing, and integration of various drone platforms to support research, training, and industry collaboration.

Key responsibilities

• Perform design calculations for multi‑copter, fixed‑wing, VTOL hybrid, and other UAV configurations.
• Select and optimise propulsion systems using multi‑objective optimisation techniques.
• Develop and test rigs for vibration, stress, strain, and deflection analysis of UAV structures.
• Create detailed 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and complete assemblies.
• Document design processes, test results, and generate technical reports.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to ensure seamless subsystem integration.
• Support any additional tasks required by the project.

Required profile

• PhD, MTech/ME, or BTech/BE in Aerospace, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline with relevant experience.
• Strong background in UAV design methodology, flight physics, and structural analysis.
• Experience in thermal and vibration management for aerial platforms.

Required skills

• SolidWorks, CATIA, or other 3D CAD software.
• Design for Manufacturing principles.
• Thermal management and vibration analysis.
• Knowledge of composite materials, aerodynamics, and strength of materials.
• Propulsion system selection and performance estimation.
• Multi‑objective optimisation techniques.
• Test rig design and structural testing (stress, strain, deflection).
• Calibration, tuning, and integration of UAV subsystems.
